Deciding to take on a large renovation project is a big decision but it is one that is often worth it. You just need to go about your renovations in a sensible, organised manner.

Where to start with your renovations? 

Before you look into builders or at any paint samples, you need to have a plan in place. Grab yourself a pen and notebook or open up a Word Doc and write down what needs doing to the property. As you progress with the renovations you may find that there are more things that need doing but, for now, write down all the things you are aware of. 

If you need planning permission for any of the things in your plan, begin this process as soon as possible. 

Now you are ready to begin renovations and it is important that you do it all in the right order. 

Box up all your belongings and bring them to our warehouse Huntingdon 

If you have been living in the house before deciding to renovate or you have brought a renovation project you will need to find a place to store all your belongings and furniture.

Tackle structural damage 

After you have brought your belongings to us, your next port of call is to make sure that your house is structurally sound. It is best to consult a structural engineer who will be able to tell you if anything needs fixing such as ceilings, walls that need stabilising or damp patches that need to be rectified.

Once you have discovered anything that needs repairing, find a certified tradesperson to do the job. Look out for certifications from places such as the National Federation of Builders or, for plumbers, make sure that they are Gas Safe Registered. 

Change the layout

If you plan to change the layout of your property, now is the time to do it. Some rooms such as the living room and bedrooms will be much easier to move. If you want to move kitchens or bathrooms, you will need to consult and hire qualified plumbers to do the extensive plumbing work. 

If you plan to remove walls, you will again need to speak with a structural engineer to make sure it’s not load-bearing. 

Update electrics and plumbing

No matter whether you are changing your layout or not, you will also need to get your electrics and plumbing checked to make sure it is all up to code. 

This will also be a good time to add new plug sockets or move light fittings. As always, make sure to use a certified electrician and/or plumber to carry out this work. 

Decorate, starting with the kitchen 

Once the electrics and plumber are up to standard, you can replaster the walls and begin to make the house into your home. 

When it comes to decorating and bringing in new fittings and fixtures, it is best to start with the kitchen. The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in a home and so it will require a great deal of attention.
