1. Step Back in Time at The Cromwell Museum

Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon in 1599 and is often regarded as one of the most important figures in British history. Unsurprisingly, his town of birth has a museum dedicated to his life and the impact he had on the British Isles. 

The collection in The Cromwell Museum comprises over 800 items, including portraits, clothing, miniatures, arms and armour, historical documents written by or about Cromwell. The museum is even housed in the old grammar school which Cromwell attended as a young boy. The exhibition at the museum tells the story of Cromwell’s life, from his time at the school and his early years in Huntingdon and St Ives, before he became involved in national politics. 

The Cromwell Museum is free and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm, between April and October. During the winter months, November to the end of March, it is open Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 3.30pm and Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 4pm. 

2. Stroll Along the Riverside Walks of The Great Ouse

Huntingdon lies on the northbank of the River Ouse, making it an excellent place to visit or live if you love enchanting riverside walks and enjoying the wonders of nature. 

There are many lovely walks for walkers and nature lovers to enjoy, including this short walk that takes you down both sides of the river, allowing you to take it all in. Riverside walks are excellent for bird watchers because many birds nest or fish alongside rivers so do remember to bring your binoculars. 

3. Visit the Historic Market Square and All Saints Church

Huntington’s market square has a deep history with an ancient Royal Charter establishing the traditional Saturday in 1205. The market still runs every Saturday and also on a Wednesday and the markets remain a part of the character of the town which help to make it an interesting place to visit. 

All Saints Church, Huntingdon also has a long history. The site it sits on has been the home of many different churches with the oldest believed to date back to 973 AD. The main structure of the modern-day church dates back to Henry VIII reign as it was rebuilt in 1620. The church has a lot of things on throughout the week but is only open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays so please plan your visit accordingly. 

4. Enjoy a Day Out at Hinchingbrooke Country Park

Hinchingbrooke Country Park is one of the wonderful things to do in Huntingdon, particularly if you love nature or have little ones who enjoy playing at a park. The park covers 150 acres and includes open grasslands, mature woodlands, wildflower meadows and lakes. There is also a play area, a cafe and hard surface paths so it is a place in which all the members of your family can enjoy. 

The park is free to enjoy and open 24/7 so it will be very easy to find a time and day to come and explore this beautiful park. 

5. Experience Local Culture at Huntingdon’s Theatres and Galleries

The Commemoration Hall should be on top of the list of places to visit in Huntingdon if you love art, entertainment and culture. The building that The Commemoration Hall is in was built in 1842 and began its life as the Huntingdon Literary and Scientific Institution. In 1956, the building was bought for £2705 and was reopened in 1959 as The Commemoration Hall.
